But don’t forget to take time to appreciate the breathtaking landscapes along the way. The freedom to explore at your own pace is what makes a self-drive safari such a unique experience.

Jessica de Hippo

Jessica’s story began in 2000, when she was just a young calf and became separated from her mother during a severe storm in Kruger National Park, South Africa. The calf was found by a local couple, Tonie and Shirley Joubert, who decided to take her in and provide the care she needed. They named her Jessica and looked after her until she had fully recovered. As Jessica grew, however, it became clear that she could no longer be released into the wild because of her strong bond with humans. Rather than keeping her in captivity, the Jouberts made the remarkable decision to allow Jessica to roam freely around their property. They built a dam for her and provided her with food, while allowing her the freedom to come and go as she pleased. Over time, Jessica’s presence attracted the attention of locals and visitors from around the world, and she became something of a local celebrity. Come and meet Jessica and visit her at her very own home, just outside Hoedspruit.
